Note 6

An article of Barber & Eccles (cited in Luqman, 2009) talks about the importance of romantic relationships to adolescent development and its “long lasting” effects on self-confidence. He pointed out that it also teaches moral values on romance, “intimate relationships” and “sexuality”. However, romantic relationships may harm adolescents and because of this, they need adults who will guide them in developing healthy relationships (Luqman, 2009). Moreover, positive dating implies positive outlook of a person’s life which may give her an inspiration in achieving goals. In addition to this, the Teenage Research Unlimited (cited in Luqman, 2009) reported that “half of all teens have been in a dating relationship and nearly one third of all teens have been in a serious relationship”.
